Our Story
Studio Abel was designed by Lydia Kalleske.
But the name has been with her far longer than the studio has.
— Abel was Lydia's older brother.
He died just before his third birthday, in a devastating family vehicle accident. Lydia was born four years later. She never met him, but she has always felt him.
That quiet, unshakeable sense of connection to someone she never knew has shaped almost everything.
The way she sees light.
The way she pays attention to small moments.
The way she has always believed, instinctively, that the work of preserving something, a face, a feeling, a fleeting second of ordinary life,
matters more than people realise.

It began in the early 2010s — quieter than it is now. Markets, antiques, restored frames, landscape and abstract work woven through. Each piece a small story. Each frame something worth keeping.
Slowly, year by year, the work changed shape. The frames gave way to businesses. The landscapes gave way to families. Abstract gave way to portraits, but the underlying belief never moved.
What we choose to capture says everything about what we choose to honour.

Studio Abel is the next chapter. A private, light-filled studio on a working Barossa farm. Calm by design. Built for the kind of work that asks something of you.
It exists because Lydia has spent over fifteen years photographing in other people's spaces, kitchens that didn't work, rooms with the wrong light, settings that asked her to make magic in spite of the environment rather than because of it.
Studio Abel was built to flip that equation.

The land it sits on has been worked by her husband's family for seven generations.
That depth of place is not decoration.
It's foundation.
A studio built on land that has held a story for two centuries, named for a brother who shaped one life without ever being part of it.
It carries Abel's name because everything Lydia has built carries Abel's name.
The studio is a continuation of the same quiet belief that started it all, that the right space, held with intention, becomes a place where stories are honoured rather than just told.
